Most U.S. residents can now access a free mail-in and drop-off program from Nespresso to recycle aluminum-based coffee capsules.
The program, which is a partnership between Nespresso and UPS, provides free recycling bags to consumers and allows them to ship capsules back to Nespresso or drop them off at retail partners and UPS stores.
The program is available to all U.S. residents, except those living in Alaska or Hawaii.
Nespresso notes a company called Ag Choice recycles the capsules by removing any remaining coffee grounds and recovering the aluminum.
Until recently, the service was only available in 20 U.S. states.
In a press release, the company, which is owned by Nestle, said it “will continue investing to make it easier for our consumers to recycle.”
The rise of single-serve coffee pods has ignited a debate over the environmental impact of the products.
Keurig, a Nespresso competitor, recently announced it would begin using recyclable plastic pods.
