Top stories from July 2024

E-scrap import enforcement action by the Malaysian government drew reader interest last month, as did a lithium-ion battery recycling startup, the ongoing legal saga of Closed Loop CRT suppliers, an e-plastics processing line and a company’s inaugural sustainability report.

The list below shows our top stories published in June in terms of unique page views.

1 | Feds fund consumer-facing battery collection

Two battery recycling projects will add drop-off locations at hundreds of Staples and Batteries Plus across the country thanks to U.S. Department of Energy funds, the agency announced this week.

2 | ERI reports 2023 was its ‘most financially successful’ year yet

Of the 124 million pounds of e-scrap nationwide processor ERI collected last year, 97% was processed for commodity recovery and the remaining 3% went to reuse. That was one takeaway from the company’s latest sustainability report.

3 | Basel regulations unite BAN and SERI in collaboration

Upcoming changes to the Basel Convention are likely to disrupt some industry practices when they take effect next year. But the changes have already had one remarkable impact: They’ve brought together two often rival certification organizations to advocate for industry-wide compliance with the new rules.

4 | Canadian province proposes e-scrap program changes

The Saskatchewan government has proposed expanding its e-scrap program to cover cell phones, power tools and more.

5 | How electronics legislation fared this legislative season

Legislative sessions are winding down for the summer. Some bills covering electronics and batteries made it across the finish line this year, while others stalled out. Here’s a roundup of what happened.
