Dirty MRF coming to Montgomery

byEditorial Staff
January 16, 2013
in Recycling

Montgomery, Alabama has plans to bring back curbside recycling. As part of the plan, it’s also working on a new $32 million materials recovery facility to be built by Florida-based Imperium Energy.

According to a report in the Montgomery Advertiser, the company has retained Bulk Handling Systems to design the system that will sort about 80 percent of the city’s unsorted refuse. The company is on track to start construction of the dirty MRF in April and have it up-and-running in summer 2014. In 2009, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange canceled the city’s curbside recycling program after discovering that the McInnis Recycling Center, where the material were sent, couldn’t handle the workload and only about 25 percent of collected recyclables were being recycled, despite the service costing the city $1 million annually.
