Flexible film packaging is being accepted at the curb in one Midwest city, and thousands of plastic bags have been diverted from landfill thanks to a group of charitable women.

Hefty, Hefty, Hefty: 6,000 households in Omaha, Neb. are now able to use the curbside program to divert plastic film, including items such as candy wrappers and chip bags. The Hefty Energy Bag program collects those items so they can be burned for energy in cement production.

A day in the life: An article in the Global Times highlights the life of a waste scavenger in Beijing. Because many large Chinese cities lack official recycling programs, many people sort through landfills to collect the recyclable items.

Bag ladies: A group of women in Tennessee are using plastic bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. According to KSAT.com, they’ve used 52,000 plastic bags so far this year.
