Dell last week became the first two-time winner of an award that honors manufacturers that keep recyclability in mind when designing products.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) honored the computer manufacturer for the company’s Latitude 5590 laptop and 5285 2-in-1 products. The 2018 Design for Recycling Award was announced at the 2018 ISRI Convention and Exposition last week in Las Vegas

Dell also won the recyclability award in 2014 for its Latitude 10 and XPS 10 tablets and Latitude E7240 laptop.

Robin Wiener, ISRI president, praised the OEM in a press release: “Dell has continued its groundbreaking designing by incorporating gold recycled from old electronics into its new products and ensuring that when Dell products reach the end of life stage, they can be recycled in a safe, environmentally-friendly manner.”

The release noted the Latitude 5590 contains a removable battery, avoids use of mercury, minimizes use of glues and adhesives and uses standardized fasteners.

The Latitude 5285 2-in-1 convertible, meanwhile, uses gold recycled from used electronic products. “Dell became the first PC manufacturer to use recycled gold in its motherboards rather than mining it,” the ISRI release states.

ISRI began presenting the Design for Recyclability award more than 10 years ago. Previous winners include Cascades Fine Papers Group, EcoStrate,Hewlett-Packard, The Herman Miller Company, LG Electronics, Samsung and Wind Simplicity.
