Electronics producer scales up recycled plastic use

Logitech has used more post-consumer plastic in its keyboards, mice, webcams and other products over the past three years.

The electronics manufacturer recently detailed its recycled resin consumption, reporting that by the end of 2021, more than half the mice and keyboards produced within the company’s largest product portfolio will be made from post-consumer resin (PCR).

Moving to recycled resin in that product line will reduce the company’s virgin plastic consumption by 14.2 million pounds per year, according to a press release.

Additionally, Logitech estimates it will have shipped more than 50 million devices that include recycled plastic by the end of 2021.

“The percent of a product’s plastic parts made of PCR currently range from 80% PCR content to no less than 20% for the technically complex lighter color products,” the company stated. “Logitech’s design goal is to continue to maximize the percentage of recycled content in each product.”

The announcement does not specify which post-consumer resins the company is using in its products. The recycled resin use has been certified by SCS Global Services, which provides third-party verification of recycled material in products.

A version of this story appeared in Plastics Recycling Update on December 16.
