Stories exploring EPR program rulemaking, fiber markets, an alternative OCC recycling rate and legal action over bag labeling drew reader attention last month.

The list below shows our top stories published in August in terms of unique page views.

1 | Eco-modulation requirements set EPR programs apart

Many recycling industry players and brands are now familiar with the base concept of extended producer responsibility for packaging, but now advisory boards, producer responsibility organizations and state regulators are working on another complex, interrelated concept: fee eco-modulation.

2 | Fiber end users forecast ‘relatively stable’ OCC market

Major recycled paper mill operators have seen a significant financial impact from rising recovered fiber prices this year. But in recent earnings calls, publicly traded firms say the roller coaster market is entering a flat stretch.

3 | Bloomberg Intelligence shares 66% OCC recycling rate

Bloomberg Intelligence has once again estimated a significantly lower OCC recycling rate than the paper manufacturing sector, and it revised past years’ rates with an updated methodology.

4 | Minnesota AG, Reynolds, Walmart settle recycling bags suit

Walmart and Reynolds Consumer Products have reached settlements with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office in a lawsuit over marketing language for bags labeled as “recycling bags.”

5 | Fiber grades hold their ground, color HDPE tanks

Prices for all major curbside paper commodities held firm in August, bringing the second straight month without major changes in fiber values. It was a different story on the plastics side, where some grades saw major price fluctuations.
