Paper company frustration with pricing indexes drew reader interest last month, as did stories looking at tariff effects, EPR program development in Oregon, and packaging companies moving from plastic to paper.

The list below shows our top stories published in February in terms of unique page views.

1 | Fiber companies begin to shift away from price indexes

Packaging Corporation of America will stop linking its customer agreements to third-party pricing indexes, becoming the second major packager to announce similar intentions due to frustration with the leading index.

2 | Metal tariffs bring varied effects for recycling sector

New tariff actions targeting aluminum and steel imports could have near-term benefits for MRF operators if the actions spur additional demand for domestic-sourced commodities. But it’s the longer-term effects that are more concerning.

3 | Plastics, recycling industries speak out on tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump implemented 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, effective Feb. 4, then delayed them, creating a rapidly changing trade landscape that furthered uncertainty in the recycling and plastics industries.

4 | Oregon fully approves first packaging EPR plan

After several years of work, Oregon has approved an extended producer responsibility plan, laying out how packaging producers are expected to fulfill the requirements of the law.

5 | Swapping paper for plastics a rising trend

Faced with public scrutiny over the use of plastic packaging, a growing number of brand owners are touting their switch to paper-based alternatives, including recent moves by Driscoll’s, Nestlé, Mars and more.
