Additive cuts acetaldehyde migration in RPET bottles
Ampacet says its additive reduces the migration of acetaldehyde by up to 80%. | Aleksandr Kurganov/Shutterstock

A global masterbatch supplier says its newly released additive allows for a higher percentage of RPET use in water bottles and preforms without affecting product taste.

Tarrytown, N.Y.-based Ampacet released AA Scavenger 0846, an additive that reduces the level of acetaldehyde in RPET bottles, according to a press release. Acetaldehyde is a byproduct of thermal degradation of PET that can occur during extrusion or injection molding.

“At a very low addition rate, Ampacet AA Scavenger 0846 reduces the migration of acetaldehyde by up to 80% while maintaining product quality and brand reputation,” according to the release.

As a result, converters can use higher percentages of PCR without affecting the water’s taste, according to Ampacet.
