SWANA hires new executive director

A new partnership between two resource-focused organizations aims to advance US waste systems toward a circular economy.

The Solid Waste Association of North America and the Product Stewardship Institute are formalizing their relationship through a new partnership focused on advancing circular economy initiatives and addressing emerging resource and waste management challenges.

The agreement establishes a framework for the two organizations to coordinate on priority issues including lithium-ion battery safety, vape disposal, compressed gas cylinder management and other materials presenting challenges to recycling and waste systems, said Amy Lestition Burke, SWANA CEO.

“Our partnership with PSI allows for greater resource and knowledge sharing on topics of mutual interest,” she said.

Under the partnership, SWANA and PSI will increase cross-participation in technical workgroups, co-host webinars and educational efforts and engage more actively at each other’s events. The formalized arrangement creates pathways for information sharing between the organizations’ respective memberships.

“This partnership brings our respective expertise together at a time when materials management policies and practices are rapidly evolving,” said Scott Cassel, CEO of PSI, adding that the organization values the chance to leverage respective strengths.

SWANA has amped up its collaborative initiatives. In August 2025, the organization renewed its three-year alliance with OSHA and the National Waste & Recycling Association to reduce workplace injuries through shared resources and training focused on common industry hazards, including needlestick injuries, slips and falls, temperature-related stress and other occupational health risks.
