Toolkit aims to lift recovery of food-service packaging

The Foodservice Packaging Institute has released a toolkit to assist communities and businesses in recycling more food-service packaging.

The Foodservice Packaging Recovery Toolkit, found at recyclefsp.org, is available free of charge. It provides information to help food-service establishments, local governments and MRF operators divert more packaging from landfill.

The Falls Church, Va.-based Foodservice Packaging Institute (FPI) estimates about one-third of food-service packaging is plastic, with the remainder made of fiber.

“Recovering cups, containers, boxes, bags and other food-service packaging is a topic of intense interest not only for consumers but also for the food-service packaging supply chain and those in the recycling and composting industries,” Lynn Dyer, president of the Foodservice Packaging Institute (FPI), stated in a press release. “We’ve created this toolkit to respond to the questions and needs of many different stakeholders involved in the recovery process.”

The toolkit was developed by FPI’s Paper Recovery Alliance and Plastics Recovery Group with help from the National Restaurant Association. An additional section, currently under development, will be geared toward operators of composting and anaerobic digestion facilities.

FPI will hold a free webinar on April 21 to showcase the new website and toolkit. Click here to register.
