Brand owner launches bottle recovery initiative

PepsiCo recently rolled out a collection system providing bins, regular collection and data analysis for bottle recycling at businesses and other non-residential spaces.

PepsiCo Recycling on April 29 announced the BottleLoop program, billed as a “technology-powered program to streamline recycling for customers.”

The program is being offered to schools, universities, stores, restaurants and other away-from-home settings. BottleLoop provides customers with bins, provides pickup services for those bins, and offers various data points tracking material generation and collection.

The service starts at $9.25 per pickup for customers, with pricing varying based on distance to nearby recycling centers, quantity of material and other factors. PepsiCo is providing the service in partnership with Replenysh, a California-based software firm serving the waste and recycling sectors.

BottleLoop bins accept all beverage containers, whether plastic, glass or aluminum. However, PepsiCo placed special emphasis on plastic bottle collection through the program, framing BottleLoop as a way to increase recycled plastic supply.

“Collected plastic bottles become part of a ‘closed loop’ system so they can be made into new product packaging, which will help advance PepsiCo’s goal to use 25% recycled plastic content” in all its plastic packaging by 2025, the company wrote.

Tim Carey, vice president of sustainability at PepsiCo Beverages North America, added that the program will “simplify recycling for our customers, help them achieve their sustainability ambitions, and work toward our own recycled content goals.”
