EPS foam recycling grants open for applications

The Foodservice Packaging Institute’s Foam Recycling Coalition is accepting applications through April 17 for grants of up to $50,000 to expand US recycling access for EPS products.

Entities operating a MRF, managing a residential curbside recycling collection program or managing a drop-off program can apply for the grants to help establish or enhance EPS foam recycling in their communities.

So far the grant program has enabled over 15 million additional residents to recycle foam polystyrene including beverage cups, egg cartons, takeout containers and packaging materials, the organization said.

Previous grant awardees, such as Nebraska’s First Star Recycling, used the funding to purchase equipment including collection bins and foam densifiers for onsite material preparation prior to shipment to customers.

Contributions to the Foam Recycling Coalition fund the grants. The group focuses exclusively on increased recycling of post-consumer foam polystyrene, and members include producers Americas Styrenics and Ineos Styrolution America; packagers and food serviceware producers CKF Inc., Dart Container, Dyne-A-Pak, Genpak, Novolex and Republic Plastics; and fast-food restaurant Chick-fil-A.
